FAQS

I have just graduated / I am about to graduate, can I still apply?

We recommend that you have spent a minimum of one year of creative practice independent of an institution.

Why is the IN RESIDENCY programme structure 10-days?

Based on our experience over the past four years of running the residencies, 10 days is the optimum time for artists, including ourselves to benefit, particularly when developing a specific longer term project.

Why have you added an IN HOUSE programme?

This is a pilot initiative directed with people who don’t have the time to commit to 10 days and/or to people who may want to return to The Grange.

Can I come on a residency outside the specific residency dates?

Unfortunately not in 2026.

Can I come for longer than the 10 days option?

Unfortunately not in 2026.

Can I come for fewer than the 10 days option?

Unfortunately not for the IN RESIDENCE programme in 2026. If you are unable to commit to the IN RESIDENCE 10-day programme, we recommend you apply to participate in one of the shorter IN HOUSE residencies. All the residencies take place on fixed dates.

I have been to The Grange on a residency before, can I re-apply?

We recommend applicants leave a gap of two years between application for the IN RESIDENCE programme. This is so we can offer the opportunity to creatives who have not been here before. However, we welcome applications for our IN HOUSE programme if you have been on a residency at The Grange before.

I don’t have a website or social media sites, what should I do?

We recommend you build a simple website or instagram account for the purpose of your application.

What do you mean by artists and creatives?

We are using these terms to embrace a variety of creative and artistic practices. This includes but is not limited to and in no particular order: fine artists, sculptors, painters, sound artists, illustrators, designers, print-makers, potters, ceramicists, comics artists, graphic novelists, poets, writers, singers, musicians, clowns, film makers, dancers, curators, photographers, architects, weavers, textile artists, actors, performance artists, novelists, dramaturgs, playwrights.

What do you mean by multi-disciplinary?

As in the answer to number 3, we have found the unique aspect of the residencies at The Grange is the interaction between people from different artistic and creative backgrounds. This is what we mean by multi-discipline.

Will you be running residencies for specific art forms eg comics?

For 2026 we currently do not have plans to do this. We have found that the multi-disciplinary approach works for everyone so far.

What are you looking for in the proposal?

For the IN RESIDENCE programme we are looking for the focus of your residency time here to be on a particular outcome, rather than a general continuation of your practice. This may be research and development or production of a project you are working on.

For the IN HOUSE programme, we are looking for what you want to focus on during your residency. This may be towards a specific project but it may be a focus on your practice more generally.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

All applications are acknowledged on receipt and will be reviewed after the submission deadline of 12 January 2026. All applicants will be notified of the outcome 2-6 February 2026. If you have not heard from us by 9 Februrary please email us.

If I’m not shortlisted will I receive feedback?

Unfortunately not in 2026. Our aim for 2026 is to curate appropriate groups of creatives that will complement each other's projects. Our motivation is to establish a critical dynamic at the heart of the residencies that all participants will benefit from, including us. If you are not shortlisted it is not a judgement on your practice or project per se, but is simply a reflection on the curatorial remit for 2026.

Why do I have to make a monetary contribution to do a residency at The Grange?

The Grange Projects is run on a not for profit basis and we receive no public funding. All monetary contributions defray our costs delivering the residency programmes. The project can only continue to run if we work on this together.

The IN RESIDENCY programme is run on a pay what you can basis. The IN HOUSE programme is run on a fixed cost basis.

What is the difference between Pay What You Can and Pay What You  Want or Feel?

The IN RESIDENCE programme is run on a Pay What You Can basis and this wording is used because it is non judgemental. The activity relies on a collaborative approach where kindness is at the centre. Our intention is that everyone can give and receive in the same spirit, in whatever form that takes. In order to ensure a rich diversity of participants we will rely on mutual support. Pay What You Want or Feel suggests a judgement on the quality of service or goods you receive. Whilst The Grange offers basic comfort, the real offer is the coming together of artists and creatives. The quality of this relies on all participants committing to the process and ethos.

Why is the IN HOUSE programme a fixed cost not not pay what you can?

The IN HOUSE programme cost is subsidised, but it is unsustainable to run on a pay what you can basis.

What is the Suspended Coffee Campaign?

“A suspended coffee is the advance purchase of a cup of coffee for someone who needs it, no matter why”  www.suspendedcoffees.com

How do I decide how much I can pay?

We are leaving this entirely up to you. We trust your judgement. We will not ask for proof of your disposable income, but ask instead that you believe in the basic concept of Generosity and Reciprocity enabling you to be part of artist led creative activity that has benefit beyond the individual. The project can only continue to run if we work on this together.

What is the minimum amount of monetary contribution I could pay?

Since all your meals and board are included in your residency, in addition to the unique opportunity of receiving critical response to your project, we recommend you consider the amount you would usually spend on your weekly living costs as a guideline. For example this would include costs such as socialising and travel as well as groceries.

What is the £540 or £60/night plus guideline amount for the pay what you can based on?

Having hosted over 200 artists here at The Grange since 2022 we've calculated that this is the minimum amount needed to cover the basic running costs of The Grange.

Can I just pay the suggested contribution?

Yes.

Can I pay more than the suggested contribution?

Yes, all extra contributions will be used to defray the costs of fellow artists.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes, we ask for a non-refundable deposit of £75 which confirms your place. We ask for the balance to be fully paid one month before your visit.

  1. In one amount

  2. In two instalments

  3. In monthly payments set up as a standing order

We are happy to work out the system that suits you best

I’m applying for funding but won’t hear back before the application deadline, what should I do?

Submit your application, If you are successful in your application, we would be unable to guarantee your place, but will add you to a reserve list.

What if I have mobility/health issues?

The Grange is an old building that imposes access restrictions, however we are keen to support everyone where possible. In your application form, please indicate any requirements you may have (in the any other information section at the end)

What if I’m accepted for a residency and something happens that means I cannot come after all?

We appreciate that life throws us the unpredictable from time to time and will be sympathetic to circumstances
