Kristaps Ancans

Kristaps Ancāns (b. Līvāni, Latvia) is an artist, writer and educator whose practice spans installation, sculpture, language and moving images. Ancāns explores the confusion in the relationship between humans, nature and machines through an evolving conceptual game with its own artificial intelligence. His installations—often containing a kinetic component—welcome questioning, inviting uncertainty in their relationship with the viewer. They set a dynamic play between formal values, laws of physics, sensual references from nature into motion—on the brink of undermining each other while held in disconcerting

harmony.

Ancāns has exhibited, lectured and taught at venues internationally, including Time Square Arts, Publiek Park/S.M.A.K Museum, The Latvian National Opera and Ballet, Riga International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Art Station Dubulti, Careva Contemporary, Code Art Fair, Tate Exchange/Tate Modern, Museum of London, Royal Academy of Arts London, Hyde Park-London, Central Saint Martins/UAL, PEER, Five Years, Shoreditch Library, Derby Museum, and Art Gallery, Vienna Contemporary, Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn Art Hall, Setouchi Triennale and Tokyo University of the Arts. Ancāns has taken part in several residencies, including the Acme Studios Residency and Awards Programme (UK), Complex Topography: the Garden (JP), Constructed (RU), Cruise of Tartu (ET). He is a laureate of the ‘Helen Scott Lidgett Studio Award 2016/2017’(UK) and the ‘Pauls Puzinas Grant’ (LV/USA) and was nominated for the Purvītis Prize (LV) as well as for the Arts Foundation Fellowship (UK). Ancāns is the Co head of POST, an interdisciplinary MA Program at the Art Academy of Latvia. He lives and works between London, Riga and Tallinn. https://www.kristapsancans.com/

Dunhill and O'Brien

Dunhill and O’Brien have been working collaboratively since 1998. Based in London, they have participated in exhibitions in galleries and project spaces in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Italy, Germany and Japan and undertaken residencies in a range of locations including the British School at Rome. Their early collaborative works explored the status of stored and lost works, both memorialising and undermining previous solo artworks, drawing attention to the emotional pull hand crafted objects can have over their makers, and the logistical absurdity often involved in packing and storing artworks. Their exhibition, Terms and Conditions, at Airspace Gallery Stoke on Trent for the British Ceramics Biennale in 2019 was produced with curatorial input from John Plowman of Beacon Bureau.

We will be transporting a large ceramic work, Holes 2 to the Grange in August. This work was made during a residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre in s’Hertogenbosch, Holland in the summer of 2002. Having placed an advert in a local paper offering our services as artists who would dig holes for free we made casts of holes in different locations around the city. While at the Grange we will reflect on the future of Holes 2, that we anticipate could involve finding a suitable site to dig further holes in which the sculpture may finally be interred ?  http://www.dunhillandobrien.co.uk/

Kathryn Maguire

The Grange Projects partnered with GroundWork Gallery, Kings Lynn Extraction: Loss and Restoration:The Artist in Residence Programme. Artists focusing on the theme of “extraction” have been selected out of an outstanding range of applicants from around the world to spend a period in residence at GroundWork Gallery and the GroundWork Gallery Residency Consortium over the summer.

More info: https://www.groundworkgallery.com/exhibition/extraction-loss-and-restoration/

As part of the GroundWork Gallery Residency Consortium The Grange Projects will host artist Kathryn Maguire in August 2022.

Kathryn Maguire intends to research the silica quarry and ancient flint in order to inform her new work about our relationships with minerals. She says: “My primary medium is sculpture and over the last seven years I have researched the locations of minerals and metals and their histories.

I use mould making as a major process and I have discovered I am using large quantities of silicone in rubber moulds. Silica sand is used in glass making, ceramics, sand blasting and yet it is also used for golf courses . I am interested in the levels of silica within our bodies.

One discourse I am interested in is the geological body and also how we use geology as technology. I am fascinated by the elements used in our daily life, by the rocks we carry about and are so dependent on. For example in phones: there is 24.88% silicon in a smartphone. “
